The French butter bell was designed so butter can be stored at room temperature without spoiling enabling it to be perfectly spreadably.  No need to rip apart your toast or flatten the perfect fluff of freshly baked bread.  Just add a touch of water to the base of the outer crock, pack the butter into the bell, and voila - your bread will thank you!
